Tragic news out of San Diego on Tuesday (July 10): A
"Twilight" fan was hit and killed by a car while crossing the street
in front of the San Diego Convention Center, site of this week's Comic-Con.
Local news affiliate U-T San Diego reported that the victim was a 53-year-old woman who,
according to the police report, was in a crosswalk and tried to run across the
street toward the convention center against the light around 9 a.m. Tuesday.
The police officers on the scene told U-T San Diego the driver of one car saw
the woman and slowed down, but the driver of a Subaru Outback didn't see her in
time. When the woman saw the oncoming car, she tried to stop herself but
apparently tripped into the car.
The woman, who has been identified only by
her first name and last initial Gisella G., was unconscious and bleeding
severely from her head when she was taken to the hospital, where she later
died.
The news of the tragedy spread rapidly via
Twitter and among the fans already gathered outside the convention center for
their annual camping out before the "Breaking Dawn" Comic-Con panel
on Thursday morning. The expansive "Twilight" fanbase was quick to mourn
a fellow Twilighter upon learning the news, using the hashtags #RIPTwiFanG and
#FandomIsFamily on Twitter.
"Sat with her the last two
days," fan Tatoo Mickey tweeted. "So much fun and such a lovely soul, only took
a moment to love her. #RIPTwiFanG"
"#RIPTwiFanG Every twilight fan
across the world is thinking of her and her family at this time," wrote Converse Robsten.
The fans have started a Twitter petition
requesting a moment of silence in honor of Gisella at Thursday's panel, as well
as a fundraiser to help her family pay for her funeral expenses.
